After the 3-D rerelease of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, George Lucas had planned to do the same to all of the Star Wars prequels, however, the newly formed Disney-Lucasfilm decided to scrap the 3-D Star Wars Prequels in lieu of the new trilogy that is currently in production.  According to a recent report, it would appear that Disney is now putting quite a bit of faith in their new IP.

Many fans assume that Lucas was just trying to make another buck off his old series.  It’s been done before, and more often then not for any other purpose then showing off they can use CGI now.  There are a lot of arguments to be made, but it is agreeable that a lot of the changes he added barely did anything for aesthetics or for the story at all.

In February of 2012, Lucasfilm released a 3-D remake of Episode 1. However, it only grossed 23 million dollars domestically. (Keep in mind Episode 1 originally grossed over 1 billion).  Lucas himself stated that the 3-D films were just the Blu-Ray releases with minor changes. (Let’s not get into the whole fandom argument over the prequels existence)

The news of the 3-D films being scrapped came right around the time that J.J. Abrams announced he would be directing the new upcoming trilogy.  With him directing and Michael Arndt (Writer of Toy Story 3) as a writer, this new Trilogy may be exactly what Star Wars to make an amazing comeback for both the new and old generation of nerds.

P.S.  If you are bored while waiting for episode 7, maybe you can try rewatch the old episodes but with a new twist.  http://www.fanpop.com/clubs/star-wars/articles/17/title/best-viewing-order-star-wars-marathon It’s always fun to take a new perspective off of things sometimes.
